An unexpected syzygy occurred when Laila Engle, Leigh Harrold and Julia Stoppa joined forces to perform Matthew Hindson’s “Death Stench” for a recital in 2008. These three musicians quickly realised they shared a passion for new music, robust reds and knock-your-socks-off spicy food. With so much in common it seemed like a crime NOT to keep playing together and Syzygy Ensemble was born. The musicians feel a deep connection and sense of relevance when performing music of their own time and are energetically prepared to share this with audiences. Striving to engage audiences with music which is ear stretching but not face slapping, Syzygy ensemble exists to deliver contemporary performances in a digestible manner, but without compromising the quality of the ingredients. They are not willing to wait 100 years for the world to catch up with composers and feel passionate about the quality of new music today.
